CHL alkulohkon pelit päätökseen

SaiPa päätti CHL alkulohkon pelit kotipelillä Eisbären Berliiniä vastaan. Eisbären varmisti aiemmin viikolla jatkopaikan, kun se voitti Ruotsissa Luulajan. Panosta tässä ottelussa kuitenkin riitti, kun kummallakin oli mahdollisuus ottaa lohkovoitto. SaiPalle siihen riitti 1 piste, kun taas saksalaiset tarvitsivat suoran 3 pisteen voiton.

Vierasjoukkue Berliin aloittikin ottelun kovalla vauhdilla, kun taas kotijoukkue SaiPa tuntui olevan vähän telineissä. Hankaluuksia SaiPalle tuotti varsinkin Berliinin kova karvauspeli, eikä SaiPa meinannut millään päästä luistelemalla kelloa keskialueelle. Mietinkin monta kertaa itse ensimmäisen erän aikana, että ei vieraat kyllä millään jaksa koko peliä karvata noin ylhäältä. Vieraat onnistuivatkin avauserässä tekemään johtomaalin. Lisämaaleja ei kuitenkaan tullut, siitä piti huolen SaiPan maalilla torjunut Frans Tuohimaa.

Toiseen erään tuli aivan uudenlainen SaiPa, kun luistin alkoi kulkemaan ihan eri tavalla. Berliini ei pystynyt enään korkealla karvauksella hankaloittamaan SaiPan peliä, vaan kotijoukkue otti hallinnan itselleen. John McFarland aloitti hienolla ohjauksella kotijoukkueen nousun. Hetken päästä McFarland pelasi jälleen loistavasti maalipaikan ja Mikael Kuronen sai viedä SaiPan 2-1 johtoon. McFarland oli päättänyt, että tänään pelataan loppuun asti ja vei SaiPan jo 3-1 johtoon upealla soolomaalilla.

Kolmannen erän alkuun Berliinin pääsi ylivoimalla kaventamaan tilanteen 3-2. SaiPa ei kuitenkaan tästä säikähtänyt, vaan koko harjoituskauden hyvin pelannut 3 ketju onnistui tässäkin pelissä tekemään maalin, kun pirteästi pelannut Eetu Koski viimeisteli 4-2. Hetkeä myöhemmin Curtis Hamilton onnistui maalinteossa vei jo SaiPan 5-2 johtoon. Vieraat onnistuivat vielä kertaalleen maalinteossa, kun SaiPan puolustus hieman sekoili. SaiPalla ei kuitenkaan todellisuudessa ollut mitään hätää ja  McFarland kruunasi iltansa tekemällä illan kolmannen maalin komealla vedolla. Näin SaiPa varmisti lohkon kärkipaikan.
SaiPan parhaimmistoa oli ehdottomasti McFarland, joka teki pisteet 3+1. Muita onnistujia olivat puolustaja Savilahti-Nagander 0+3 ja hyökkääjä Tero Koskiranta 0+2.

CHL on kyllä hieno sarja, kun on mahdollisuus nähdä sellaisia joukkueita, joita ei muuten tulisi seurattua. Lisäksi on hienoa, että joukkueiden fanit liikkuvat joukkueiden mukana. Nytkin Lappeenrantaan saapui Saksasta bussilastillinen faneja, joilla oli kyllä koko ottelun ajan mahtava meininki. Jaksoivat laulaa ja rummuttaa koko ottelun ajan, oli tilanne joukkueella mikä tahansa. Olivat myöskin erittäin sivistyneitä faneja ja lauloivat vielä puoli tuntia ottelun päätyttyä hallissa. Olisi varmasti hienoa käydä katsomassa Saksassa peli, kun noita faneja on muutama tuhat enemmän. Voi olla aika kova meteli hallissa, kun se nyt jo oli suhteellisen kova, noin pienellä porukalla. Iso tunnustus Saksan fanikulttuuria kohtaan.
